Born in Bristol in 1974, Banksy is simply the most famous and beloved contemporary street artist. Known for his urban interventions that demonstrate irreverent wit and a biting political edge, but also for ingenious anonymous performances. Reinforcing his mystique while maintaining an anonymous identity, the artist has altered street signs, illegally printed his own currency, and illegally hung his work in the Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art. He often uses spray paint and stencils in his critiques of consumerism, political authority, terrorism, and the status of art and its display. His street art, installations and studio-produced works have been exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, London, Bethlehem and beyond. His art has been the subject of widespread interest on the secondary market and has sold at auction for millions. Multiplied art appearing on the market and even simple gadgets and original souvenirs have, for years, unstoppably rising quotations.
