Silvio Loffredo was born in 1920 in the Parisian district of Montparnasse, to an Italian family. His father - Michele Loffredo, a Neapolitan from Torre del Greco - is a professional painter and it was he who taught him the first secrets of the trade. Silvio is literally fascinated by his father figure. He draws a brief profile of his father-master in a little book of memories: "My father in that studio was my first teacher, he helped me to understand the colour, the shape and to crystallize the light on the thinly modelled. From him and his realism à la Corot - Courbet I learned the sense of measure and the art of dosing values. He was demanding and sharp, and from his ironic speech descended like sentences lucid considerations and thoughts of a fiery and generous temperament". After attending nude courses at la Grand Chaumière, in 1940 he came to Italy to perfect his studies and attended the Art Institute of Siena and the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and Florence. Immediately after the war he returned to Paris and finally found at home in Florence, the city where he chose to stay for the rest of his life, becoming one of the leading figures on the artistic scene, a friend of Ottone Rosai and Ardengo Soffici, promoter of a continuous exchange of experiences between Italy and France. In the fifties he travelled to Austria and came into contact with Oskar Kokoschka, who from that moment on became his master and his cultural reference and who strongly influenced his stylistic research. He participated with a personal exhibition at the XXXII International Art Exhibition in Venice and numerous editions of the Quadriennale di Roma. From 1973 to 1990 he held the Chair of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, after having taught artistic education in the "Piero Calamandrei" middle school of the same city. His figurative painting is characterized by an ironic, free, very recognizable style of clear post-expressionist matrix. Recurring themes are cats, portraits, baptisteries, images of life in the city, bestiaries. There is no lack of interpretations of female nudes, which reflect the seriousness of specific youthful studies. His works are preserved at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome and in museums in New York, Paris, Brussels, Milan, Pisa. Two self-portraits are exhibited at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. He died in Trebiano on July 28, 2013.
