MARCELLO SCUFFI

Marcello Scuffi was born in Tizzana, near Quarrata (Pistoia) in 1948. Self-taught, he has been painting since 1970 and a few years later began to devote himself exclusively to painting. From the beginning he appears in various group exhibitions and numerous solo shows. He achieved international fame-particularly in Belgium, Switzerland and France-and for a time lived and worked in Brussels. In his canvases, as well as in his frescoes and watercolors, one paradoxically recognizes a hand unchanged over time, although the works of his early years appear brighter and clearer. An “exponent of modern neo-Italianism,” as Vittorio Sgarbi called him, recalling primitivist languages of our rappel à l'ordre, such as Carrà, Rosai, Morandi, and Casorati, in whose works the subject shifts from landscapes to still lifes. From these artists, however, Scuffi departed, abandoning exasperations and stripping art of unnecessary trappings. He passed away in Quarrata on May 18, 2021.
